FIFA President Infantino Denies Trump’s Call Influenced Decision to Lift Balogun’s Suspension

 

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has dismissed suggestions that U.S. President Donald Trump’s intervention influenced the decision to lift the suspension of United States striker Folarin Balogun, insisting that FIFA’s judicial bodies operate independently and without external interference.

Infantino’s statement comes amid widespread debate following FIFA’s decision to overturn Balogun’s one-match suspension, allowing the U.S. international to remain eligible for the team’s next fixture at the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The decision drew global attention after President Trump publicly revealed that he had contacted Infantino to request a review of Balogun’s suspension, arguing that it was unfair for the striker to miss a match because of a red card received in the previous game.

Responding to the controversy, Infantino stressed that FIFA’s disciplinary process remains independent and that the decision was reached solely by the organisation’s judicial bodies in accordance with its regulations.

“I have seen the public comments regarding the decision of the independent FIFA Disciplinary Committee related to the suspension of Folarin Balogun, and I would like to reiterate a fundamental principle of FIFA’s governance,” Infantino said.

He explained that FIFA’s judicial bodies operate autonomously, applying the FIFA Disciplinary Code and deciding cases based on the facts presented before them.

“Their independence is essential to the credibility and integrity of football, and this must always be respected,” he added.

Infantino acknowledged that he had indeed spoken with President Trump about the matter but maintained that the conversation had no bearing on the outcome of the disciplinary proceedings.

According to him, he informed the U.S. president that the matter was already before FIFA’s independent judicial bodies and would be determined through the organisation’s established legal process.

“Yes, I did receive a call from President Donald Trump, just as I receive calls from heads of state, government officials, football stakeholders and business executives from around the world on many different issues,” Infantino stated.

“During our conversation, I explained that there was an ongoing legal process involving FIFA’s independent judicial bodies and that the case would be decided in due course by the competent bodies.”

The FIFA president further noted that he does not interfere in disciplinary decisions, even when he personally agrees or disagrees with the outcomes.

“I read the decisions of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee when they are issued. Sometimes I am surprised by them. Sometimes I agree with them, and sometimes I disagree,” he said.

“What I always do, however, is respect those decisions and the autonomy of the bodies that make them. Whether we personally like a decision or not is irrelevant. Respect for independent institutions and the rule of law is what protects the integrity of our competitions and the credibility of FIFA at all times.”

The controversy has sparked intense discussion within the football community, with many questioning whether political figures should have any role in matters relating to FIFA’s disciplinary process.

While Infantino’s statement seeks to reassure football fans that the governing body’s judicial system remains independent, the incident has continued to fuel debate over transparency, governance and the perception of external influence during one of the sport’s biggest tournaments.
