Police Officer Reminds Nigerians: Bail Is Free at Every Police Station

A senior Nigerian police officer, CSP Okokon Aniete Iniedu, has reminded Nigerians that bail is free and that no police station is legally permitted to demand payment before granting bail.

Iniedu made the clarification during an interview with media personality Nedu, where he urged members of the public to understand their rights when dealing with the police.

According to the officer, many Nigerians sign bail documents without reading them carefully, despite the documents stating that no payment was made for the bail process.

“Many people do not read the form they sign because it’s clearly stated there that I didn’t pay one single naira for this bail,” Iniedu said.

He explained that people are often in a hurry to leave the police station and therefore sign the documents without checking their contents.

The police officer stressed that paying money for bail is not permitted at any police station in Nigeria.

“The law doesn’t allow anybody to pay for bail in any police station in Nigeria,” he said.

Iniedu also advised Nigerians who are asked to pay money before securing the release of a suspect on bail to report the matter immediately.

“If you enter any police station to bail somebody and they ask for money, just tell them that you want to call the Inspector-General of Police (IGP),” he said.

He provided three channels through which members of the public can report complaints involving officers allegedly demanding payment for bail.

Iniedu encouraged Nigerians to speak up and report any police officer who demands money for bail, stressing that members of the public should not be required to pay for the bail process.

The clarification comes amid long-standing complaints from Nigerians about alleged demands for money at police stations during bail and other processes.

2 Men Escape as Police Recover Gun, Live Bullet and Suspected Drugs in Ibadan

Two men fled while another was arrested after operatives of the Oyo State Police Command intercepted three suspects during a stop-and-search operation in Ibadan, leading to the recovery of a locally fabricated pistol, a live cartridge and suspected illicit drugs.

The operation was carried out on the night of July 11, 2026, by officers attached to the Bodija Housing Police Division during an intelligence-led patrol along Oshuntokun Avenue in the Bodija area of Ibadan.

According to the Police Command, the three suspects were riding a Bajaj motorcycle when they were stopped for a routine search. During the operation, one of the suspects allegedly threw a small bag into a nearby drainage, while two others immediately fled the scene with the motorcycle.

The third suspect, identified as Hammed Lateef, was arrested at the scene.

A search of the discarded bag led to the recovery of a locally fabricated pistol, one live cartridge, sachets containing substances suspected to be Tramadol, and a passport photograph believed to belong to one of the fleeing suspects.

The Police said investigations have commenced, while efforts are underway to identify and arrest the two fleeing suspects.

Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, CP Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, reiterated the Command’s commitment to tackling illegal firearms and other criminal activities through proactive, intelligence-driven policing.

He also appealed to residents to continue providing timely and credible information that will assist security agencies in preventing crime and bringing offenders to justice.

The Oyo State Police Command urged members of the public to report suspicious activities through the state’s emergency response channels as the manhunt for the fleeing suspects continues.

Police Launch Nationwide Campaign to Combat Cultism, Drug Abuse

The Nigeria Police Force has launched a nationwide advocacy and sensitization campaign aimed at tackling cultism, drug abuse, violent crime, and other social vices across the country.

The initiative, known as the Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices (POCACOV), was flagged off by the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, with activities scheduled to commence across all state police commands.

According to a statement issued on Saturday by the Force Headquarters, the campaign forms part of the Police Force’s commitment to proactive policing, community engagement, and crime prevention through grassroots sensitisation, early intervention, and collaboration with key stakeholders.

The police said POCACOV is its flagship community policing initiative designed to discourage young people from engaging in cultism, drug abuse, violent crimes, and other forms of criminality by promoting positive values and responsible citizenship.

As part of the campaign, state commands will work closely with schools, communities, religious organisations, traditional institutions, and other relevant groups to educate young people on the dangers of social vices and encourage lawful behaviour.

The Force said the initiative is expected to strengthen partnerships between the police and members of the public while addressing the root causes of youth involvement in crime.

It reaffirmed its commitment to preventive policing strategies that prioritise public safety, protect young people from criminal influences, and promote safer communities across Nigeria.

The nationwide campaign is expected to feature advocacy programs, school outreaches, community engagements, and awareness activities across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
