U.S. President Donald Trump has issued one of his strongest warnings yet to Iran, declaring that the United States has the military capability to destroy the country’s critical infrastructure within hours if diplomatic efforts fail.
Speaking during remarks on the ongoing tensions between Washington and Tehran, Trump said his administration remains committed to pursuing a diplomatic agreement but warned that military action remains an option if negotiations break down.
“We’re going to win one way or the other. We’re going to make a deal or we’re going to finish the job, okay. And it won’t be tough to finish the job,” Trump said.
The president stressed that his preference was to resolve the dispute through dialogue, saying he wanted to avoid the humanitarian consequences that a military confrontation could have on Iran’s population of more than 90 million people.
“I’d rather make a deal because I don’t want to affect 91 million people,” he said.
Despite expressing support for diplomacy, Trump outlined the scale of military force he claimed the United States could deploy if negotiations fail.
“We can knock down their bridges in one hour. We can knock out their energy supply,” he said.
“We can knock out their electricity and power generating plants. And I would say in a small part of an afternoon, every plant will be gone. And they know that.”
The remarks come as efforts to resolve longstanding disputes over Iran’s nuclear programme and regional security continue to face significant challenges. While negotiations have remained a preferred path for both sides at various stages, relations between the two countries have been marked by years of sanctions, military tensions and diplomatic disagreements.
Trump’s latest comments are expected to draw international attention, particularly among U.S. allies and Middle Eastern governments monitoring developments in the region. Analysts say such statements could increase pressure on ongoing diplomatic efforts while also raising concerns about the potential consequences of any military escalation.
Iranian officials have consistently maintained that the country’s nuclear programme is intended for peaceful purposes and have repeatedly warned that any military action against the country would be met with a response.
At the time of publication, Iranian authorities had not publicly responded to Trump’s latest remarks.
