“Messi Is Miles Ahead of Ronaldo” — Mikel Obi Explains Why Chelsea Feared the Argentine More

Former Chelsea and Nigeria midfielder John Obi Mikel has reignited the long-running Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo debate, saying the Argentine was a far more difficult opponent to face during his playing career.

Speaking in a recent interview, Mikel said there was “no comparison” between the two football icons, explaining that Chelsea’s approach to stopping Ronaldo was completely different from the tactics used against Messi.

According to the former Super Eagles captain, then-Chelsea manager José Mourinho would often assign a single defender, usually Ashley Cole, to deal with Ronaldo whenever they faced Manchester United.

However, Mikel said preparing for Barcelona and Messi required an entirely different strategy.

“Messi is miles ahead of Ronaldo. There’s no comparison,” Mikel said.

“Against Manchester United, Mourinho would tell Ashley Cole to handle Ronaldo. But for Messi, we’d spend the whole week preparing for him… then the coach would say, ‘Just kick him and put two men on him.’”

Mikel’s comments reflect the enormous challenge Messi posed during Barcelona’s dominance in European football, when the Spanish giants frequently clashed with Chelsea in memorable UEFA Champions League encounters.

The former midfielder was part of several Chelsea teams that faced both Barcelona and Manchester United, giving him firsthand experience of playing against two of football’s greatest stars.

His remarks have already sparked fresh debate among football fans on social media, with supporters of both Messi and Ronaldo defending their preferred player.

While opinions remain divided, Mikel believes Messi’s ability to influence games made him the tougher opponent whenever Chelsea came up against Barcelona.
