Why Nigerian Youth Must Power the Solar Revolution - By Osuolale Oyenike
Osuolale Oyenike advocates greater youth participation in Nigeria’s transition to solar and renewable energy |
If you grew up in Nigeria, you know that sound.
The loud cough of a generator at 7pm. The scramble to buy fuel when there is light in the next street but not yours. The phone at 10 per cent with no electricity to charge it.
We have been managing darkness for too long in a country blessed with abundant sunlight. That is why I am excited about Solar Power Nigeria.
Solar Power Nigeria is not just talking about solar panels. It is building a movement of young Nigerians who will contribute to Nigeria’s clean energy transition through digital storytelling, community action and skills.
Why should young Nigerians care?
It is about jobs : Solar is a growing industry in Nigeria, creating opportunities across areas such as installation, sales, marketing, content creation and community engagement. These are opportunities young Nigerians can pursue within their own communities.
It is about saving money : How much do you spend on fuel or charging your phone at a business centre every month? Solar energy can help reduce some of these costs and provide an alternative source of power.
It is about our voice : For years, decisions about our energy have often been discussed without enough youth participation. Solar Power Nigeria is creating opportunities for young people to participate as Social Media Ambassadors, volunteers and community organisers.
I am joining because I am tired of complaining about electricity. I want to be part of the solution.
Imagine a Lagos where every school has access to solar power. An Aba where tailors do not have to stop work because the electricity supply is interrupted. A Kano where students can study at night without relying on generators.
That Nigeria is possible, and young Nigerians have a role to play in building it.
We are the generation that can help move Nigeria from generator noise towards a greater reliance on solar power.
