Google’s New AI Boss Takes Charge as AI Race Gets Tougher

Google has handed operational control of its artificial intelligence division to Koray Kavukcuoglu, placing the longtime DeepMind technology chief at the centre of the company’s battle to keep pace with rivals including OpenAI and Anthropic.

The leadership change comes at a critical moment for Google, as the technology giant faces increasing pressure to turn its enormous investment in artificial intelligence into products capable of competing with some of the industry’s fastest-moving AI companies. 

Kavukcuoglu will take on the role of senior vice president and chief AI architect, giving him responsibility for the day-to-day leadership of Google DeepMind. His appointment follows a major restructuring announced by Alphabet, Google’s parent company.

The changes also involve Demis Hassabis, the co-founder of DeepMind and one of the most prominent figures in the global AI industry. Hassabis is stepping away from day-to-day management to become Alphabet’s chief scientist and chairman of DeepMind.

Rather than leaving the AI race, Hassabis is expected to focus more heavily on long-term research, artificial general intelligence (AGI), and the broader scientific and social implications of increasingly powerful AI systems. He will also have more time to devote to Isomorphic Labs, the DeepMind spin-off working on AI applications in drug discovery. 

The restructuring effectively separates some of Google’s immediate commercial and operational AI responsibilities from Hassabis’ longer-term scientific ambitions. For Kavukcuoglu, however, the timing could hardly be more significant.

Google is competing in an increasingly crowded AI market where OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude have become major forces, while other companies are also investing heavily in advanced AI models, agents and infrastructure.

Google has its own major advantage: the company has spent years developing AI research, computing infrastructure and products, and its Gemini family of models has become a central part of its strategy.

But the competition has become so intense that being one of the world’s biggest technology companies is no longer enough. Google must continue improving its AI models while also finding ways to integrate them into its enormous ecosystem of products and services.

Why Hassabis is stepping back

Hassabis’ new position does not represent a departure from Google’s AI ambitions, instead, it gives one of the company’s most influential AI researchers more freedom to concentrate on longer-term scientific goals.

Hassabis became globally recognised through DeepMind’s work on advanced AI systems, including AlphaGo and AlphaFold. His work on AlphaFold contributed to his 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, which he shared with John Jumper. 

His shift toward a chief scientist role therefore places him in a position where he can focus more directly on what Google sees as the next generation of AI research, particularly AGI.

AGI generally refers to AI systems capable of performing a broad range of intellectual tasks at a level comparable to, or beyond, humans.

That long-term objective is becoming increasingly important as technology companies move beyond simple chatbots and search assistants towards AI agents capable of reasoning, coding, research and completing complex tasks.

Google faces pressure from AI rivals

The leadership restructuring comes as Google faces a difficult competitive environment.

OpenAI remains one of the most recognisable names in consumer AI, while Anthropic has gained significant attention for its Claude models and focus on AI safety and enterprise applications.

Google is also dealing with the loss of several senior AI researchers. Among those who have recently departed are prominent figures including Jeff Dean, Sanjay Ghemawat, Oriol Vinyals and Quoc Le, who have moved toward a new venture known as Discovery Loop. 

The departures have raised questions about Google’s ability to retain top AI talent at a time when competition for researchers and engineers has become intense.

Alphabet’s shares also fell following the leadership changes, reflecting investor concerns about Google’s AI strategy and the challenges facing the company. 

What Kavukcuoglu brings to the role

Kavukcuoglu is not an outsider brought in to rescue Google’s AI division. He has been deeply involved with DeepMind for years and has served as its chief technology officer.

His promotion therefore gives Google an AI leader with extensive knowledge of the company’s research, technology and infrastructure. His challenge will be to translate that expertise into faster execution and stronger commercial results.

Google’s AI strategy is heavily centred around Gemini, its family of artificial intelligence models, as the company attempts to incorporate advanced AI into products used by billions of people.

The company must also balance the enormous costs associated with AI development with the need to deliver products that generate significant value.

A new phase in Google’s AI battle

The latest changes suggest that Google is entering a new phase of its AI strategy as Hassabis will concentrate more on the long-term scientific direction, while Kavukcuoglu takes responsibility for operational execution.

The division of responsibilities could allow Google to pursue two goals simultaneously: pushing the boundaries of AI research while moving faster in the commercial race.

The AI race is no longer simply about which company can produce the most impressive chatbot. The competition now involves computing power, AI models, chips, data, talent, enterprise adoption, consumer products and the race towards increasingly capable AI agents.

The company helped lay much of the scientific foundation behind today’s AI boom, including research that contributed to the development of transformer-based AI systems. Yet rivals have moved quickly to capture the public imagination and large portions of the market.

With Kavukcuoglu now taking charge of Google DeepMind’s operations, the company will be hoping its next chapter in AI will be defined less by catching up and more by taking the lead.

The coming months could show whether Google’s latest leadership shake-up is the beginning of a stronger AI strategy or another sign of how difficult the race has become.

Nigerian-American Engineer Yinka Ogunbiyi Develops World’s First Hair-Braiding Robot


A Nigerian-American engineer and entrepreneur, Yinka Ogunbiyi, is making global headlines after developing what is being described as the world’s first braid-assist robot, an innovation designed to transform the hair-braiding industry by reducing the time and physical strain involved in the process.

Ogunbiyi, a graduate of Harvard University with backgrounds in engineering and business, founded HaloBraid, a technology company focused on using robotics to support professional hairstylists rather than replace them.

The innovation was inspired by a personal experience during the COVID-19 pandemic when Ogunbiyi attempted to braid her own hair. The process reportedly took four days, prompting her to question why a task performed by millions of people worldwide had not yet benefited from robotic assistance.

That question eventually led to the creation of HaloBraid.

Unlike conventional assumptions about automation, the HaloBraid machine does not completely replace hairstylists. Instead, it serves as an intelligent assistant by handling the repetitive weaving process after a stylist begins the braid and positions the hair extensions.

The technology is designed to reduce the thousands of repetitive hand and wrist movements professional braiders perform daily, movements that often contribute to fatigue, arthritis, wrist injuries and other long-term occupational health problems.

According to the company, the robot can complete sections of the braiding process significantly faster than manual methods, helping salons serve more clients while reducing physical stress on stylists.

The innovation has already attracted widespread attention within the beauty and technology industries.

Reports indicate that HaloBraid has secured approximately $7 million in seed funding from investors, including Seven Seven Six, the venture capital firm founded by Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian.

The company also says thousands of salons have expressed interest in adopting the technology once commercial production begins.

Speaking about the project, Ogunbiyi has consistently stressed that the robot is intended to empower hairstylists, not replace them.

She believes professional braiders will continue to play the most important role in creating hairstyles, while robotics can take over the repetitive aspects of the work, allowing stylists to focus on creativity, customer care and precision.

The breakthrough is being celebrated by many as another example of African excellence in science, engineering and innovation, demonstrating how technology can be used to solve everyday problems affecting millions of people across the world.

As the global beauty industry continues to embrace artificial intelligence and robotics, HaloBraid is expected to open a new chapter in haircare by combining traditional braiding techniques with modern engineering.

If successfully commercialised, the invention could significantly reduce salon appointment times while improving working conditions for professional braiders across the world.

Sowore: Nigeria Must Not Miss the Fourth Industrial Revolution


Human rights activists and AAC presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has renewed his call for Nigeria to embrace the Fourth Industrial Revolution, warning that the country cannot afford to miss another opportunity for technological and economic transformation.

Sowore made the appeal while sharing a video showing what appears to be an innovative personal aircraft or flying vehicle being demonstrated, using it to illustrate the rapid pace of technological advancement taking place around the world.

In a statement accompanying the video, Sowore said the world has passed through four major industrial revolutions, each fundamentally transforming economies, industries and human society.

According to him, the First Industrial Revolution introduced mechanisation powered by water and steam, the Second Revolution ushered in mass production through electricity, while the Third Revolution brought automation driven by digital technology.

He noted that the world is now witnessing the Fourth Industrial Revolution, powered by artificial intelligence, robotics, blockchain, biotechnology, quantum computing and cyber-physical systems.

“Nigeria missed the opportunities presented by the first three industrial revolutions, largely because of decades of poor leadership, poor governance, and a failure to invest in innovation, education and technological development,” Sowore wrote.

“As a result, our nation has remained largely dependent on consuming technologies developed elsewhere instead of creating them.”

The former presidential candidate argued that Nigeria must not repeat what he described as past mistakes, stressing that the current technological revolution presents the country’s best opportunity to leapfrog decades of underdevelopment.

He maintained that embracing science, innovation and technology would require replacing what he described as incompetence, corruption and recycled politics with visionary leadership committed to developing human capital.

“We cannot afford to repeat that mistake. The Fourth Industrial Revolution is the greatest technological transformation in human history, and Nigeria must seize this opportunity to leap forward rather than fall further behind,” he said.

According to Sowore, investing in research, innovation, digital infrastructure and emerging technologies will be essential if Nigeria hopes to compete in the global economy and create opportunities for its growing youth population.

He concluded by saying Nigeria’s future depends on embracing technological advancement, ending his message with his campaign slogan, ”#SOWORE2027 IS THE ANSWER.”

The video shared alongside his statement has since attracted reactions on social media, with many users describing it as an example of how rapidly technology is evolving and why countries that fail to invest in innovation risk falling further behind.

AI Voice Case: Man Accused of Cloning Tinubu’s Voice Regains Freedom, Faces Fresh Charges

The young man accused of creating and circulating an AI-generated voice note allegedly impersonating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has regained his freedom after spending weeks in police detention and later at the Kuje Correctional Centre.

His release was confirmed on Monday by activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore, who said human rights lawyer Prince Wayne Esq. Aluta Icon Chikeze secured the young man’s release during a court proceeding.

According to Sowore, the suspect, identified as Ifechukwu Dennis, has since reunited with his family after his release from custody.

However, Sowore claimed that the legal battle is far from over, alleging that the Nigeria Police Force has filed fresh charges against Dennis before the Federal High Court.

“We were present in court to witness it, and we’ve since confirmed that he’s rejoined his family,” Sowore wrote in a statement shared on his social media platforms.

He added that his team would continue to challenge the new charges in court, describing the prosecution as an attempt to continue what he believes is an unjust campaign against the young man.

“The fight is far from over. We will continue to challenge these charges and stand with him until he is completely free,” Sowore said.

The activist also used the opportunity to call for greater support for innovation among young Nigerians, arguing that the country should encourage technology and creativity instead of criminalising them.

“Nigeria’s young people need opportunities to learn, innovate, create and flourish, not incarceration and endless prosecution,” he stated.

The case attracted widespread public attention after authorities accused Dennis of producing an artificial intelligence-generated audio recording allegedly designed to imitate President Tinubu’s voice.

The development means that although Dennis has been released from custody, he is still expected to face legal proceedings as the matter moves before the court.
