X User Apologises to OPay After Company Threatens Legal Action Over Shutdown Claim
An X user, Cute Hafserh (@haifah_er_abba), has apologised to OPay after the fintech company threatened legal action over a viral post claiming that the platform would suspend operations indefinitely from September 1, 2026.
Hafserh had earlier shared a message alleging that OPay would go on a “long indefinite break” from September 1, advising customers to withdraw their funds and claiming that the company would stop attending to transactions and account-related services.
OPay subsequently rejected the claim as false and issued a formal legal demand to the X user.
In a letter dated August 31, OPay’s Chief Legal Counsel, Akinfolabi Moses Rokosu, accused Hafserh of publishing information that was false, malicious, libellous and defamatory, saying the publication had caused reputational and commercial damage to the company.
The company demanded that she permanently delete the post, stop further dissemination of the claim, issue a clear retraction and tender an unreserved apology by 11:59 p.m. on August 31.
OPay also warned that failure to comply would result in the company taking appropriate legal action and pursuing all available remedies.
Hafserh has now taken down the controversial post and issued an apology to the fintech company.
In her response, she explained that the message had been circulating online for several days before she shared it on her X account.
She admitted that the information was false and misleading and clarified that OPay’s operations are normal.
“OPay operations are normal and there is no break or shutdown,” she stated.
The X user also apologised for any inconvenience caused by sharing and reposting the information, while thanking OPay and its customers for their understanding.
The development brings an apparent end to the immediate dispute, while also serving as another reminder of the risks of sharing unverified claims concerning financial institutions.
OPay had earlier urged members of the public to verify information through its official channels before acting on or circulating viral messages about its services.
