Tope Alabi Issues Legal Warning Over False and Defamatory Publications

Gospel singer and minister Evangelist Tope Alabi has issued a legal warning to individuals spreading what she describes as false and defamatory statements about her, threatening legal action against those found responsible.

The warning was contained in a public notice dated October 23, 2026, issued by Oakmount Legal Practitioners, the law firm representing the gospel artiste.

In the notice signed by Toluwanimi V. Okunade, the lawyers said their client had spent nearly 30 years building a reputation for integrity and public trust in her personal, professional and spiritual life.

The firm said it had become aware of statements concerning Alabi that it considered false, misleading and harmful to her reputation, warning that such publications could attract legal consequences.

According to the notice, liability could extend beyond the original source of a statement to individuals who repeat, repost, share, forward or otherwise amplify the material, depending on the circumstances and applicable legal defences.

The lawyers also warned that using anonymous or pseudonymous social media accounts would not automatically protect individuals from legal liability. They said their client reserved the right to seek court orders to identify those responsible for offending publications where legally permissible.

The notice further demanded that anyone who had already published the alleged material remove it immediately and refrain from further publication. It added that deleting such content would not necessarily eliminate liability for its earlier publication.

Oakmount Legal Practitioners said Alabi had instructed the firm to institute legal proceedings against anyone whose conduct gave rise to an actionable claim, without further notice.

The legal remedies being considered include damages, injunctions against further publication, court orders requiring retractions and public apologies, and recovery of legal costs where permitted by law.

However, the notice clarified that it was not intended to restrict truthful statements, fair comment on matters of public interest or the lawful exercise of freedom of expression.

The firm said all its client’s legal rights and remedies remained reserved.

The notice did not identify specific publications or individuals accused of making the alleged defamatory statements.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has warned Nigerians that refusing to return money mistakenly sent to their bank accounts could lead to five to 10 years in prison.

CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso gave the warning through the bank’s spokesperson, Hakama Sidi Ali, during a stakeholders’ meeting under the CBN Listens Programme at Jogor Event Centre in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Cardoso warned bank customers not to keep money wrongly sent to their accounts. He said the money should be returned to its rightful owner. He also warned people against obtaining or sharing other people’s banking information through fraudulent means.

“A customer who fails to refund wrongly deposited money to the rightful owner attracts 5–10 years’ imprisonment,” Cardoso stated.

The governor said the CBN Listens Programme was created to improve communication between the apex bank and stakeholders. He said the programme would also help the CBN explain its policies, correct wrong information and receive feedback to improve the financial system.

He said the CBN had introduced several reforms to strengthen financial stability, promote transparency, expand financial inclusion and support economic growth.

The reforms include the non-resident Bank Verification Number (BVN) for Nigerians living abroad, foreign exchange market reforms, the Nigerian Payments System Vision 2028 and the Nigerian Overnight Financial Rate.

Cardoso also reminded bank customers that they could report unresolved complaints to the CBN if their banks failed to address them within the required time.

He said customers could contact the Director of the CBN’s Consumer Protection and Financial Inclusion Department if their bank failed to acknowledge a complaint within three days.

Customers whose complaints remain unresolved within the time set by the Consumer Protection Regulation can also request a tracking number to follow up on their cases.

The CBN urged customers to stay alert, protect their banking information and use the proper channels to resolve disputes with financial institutions.

Man Dies Trying to Rescue Toddler Who Fell Into Well in Lagos

A man has died while attempting to rescue a toddler who fell into a domestic well in Abule Egba, Lagos State, while efforts to recover the child’s body were eventually called off after a difficult search operation.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, October 20, at No. 4, Paul Street, inward Agbe Road, where the toddler, whose mother worked as a cleaner in the compound, reportedly fell into the well.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said it received a distress call at 9:48 a.m. and immediately deployed its response team from the Igando Base.

According to a statement signed by the agency’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, a member of the Hausa community in the area entered the well in an attempt to save the child but became trapped and was later recovered dead.

LASEMA, working with the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps and the Nigeria Police Force, launched a coordinated rescue operation despite the difficult conditions inside the well.

The agency said the rescuer’s remains were handed over to his relatives and members of the Hausa community for burial in line with their customs.

However, attempts to recover the toddler were unsuccessful because of the high water level and thick mud at the bottom of the well. Dewatering operations proved challenging, leading responders to bring in a specialist local diver for a final search.

According to LASEMA, the diver determined that the child’s body had sunk deep into the mud and could not be retrieved. Only one of the toddler’s shoes was recovered during the operation.

Following an expert assessment and consultations with the family and community leaders, the agency announced the conclusion of the search, with all emergency responders returning to their bases.

Oke-Osanyintolu expressed condolences to the affected families and the Hausa community, while acknowledging the man’s courage in risking his life in an attempt to save the toddler.

The Lagos State Government, under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, also extended its condolences to the bereaved families.

LASEMA urged residents to ensure that wells and other openings within residential premises are properly covered, raised and secured, particularly in homes where young children live.

The agency also advised residents to contact emergency responders through its toll-free numbers, 767 and 112, rather than attempt dangerous rescue operations that could result in further casualties.

AAC Seeks Tinubu’s Approval to Hold 2027 Campaign Council Inauguration at Presidential Villa

The African Action Congress (AAC) has written to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, seeking approval to inaugurate its Presidential Campaign Council at the Presidential Villa, Aso Rock, Abuja, on November 11, 2026, ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a letter dated October 21, 2026, and signed by the party’s National Secretary, Oshiokhue Philip Ikpeminoghena, the AAC also requested food, drinks and other logistical support for 5,000 participants expected to attend the event from within Nigeria and abroad.

The party said the request was made in the spirit of multiparty democracy, political inclusiveness and equal treatment of political parties.

According to the letter addressed to the President, the AAC argued that granting its request would demonstrate the Presidency’s commitment to fairness and equal access to public institutions, regardless of political affiliation.

The party cited arrangements it said had reportedly been extended to the All Progressives Congress (APC) for a similar political engagement, arguing that its request should receive comparable consideration.

The proposed inauguration is expected to form part of the AAC’s preparations for the 2027 general elections.
