Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Femi Falana has challenged former Borno State Governor Ali Modu Sheriff to sue him over allegations linking the former governor to the origins of Boko Haram. Speaking in a video circulating online, Falana insisted he was prepared to defend his statements in court if Sheriff believes they are false.

Falana made the remarks while speaking during a public engagement, where he revisited claims that have circulated in Nigeria’s political space for several years.

According to the human rights lawyer, Sheriff founded Boko Haram and was at one point arrested in Cameroon over alleged links to the group before the Nigerian government reportedly intervened to secure his release.

Falana maintained that if the allegations were false, Sheriff should seek legal redress against him.

“If what I have said is false, Ali Modu Sheriff should take me to court,” Falana said.

The comments have reignited public discussion over the origins of Boko Haram, a militant group whose insurgency has claimed thousands of lives and displaced millions of people, particularly in Nigeria’s North-East.

However, Shemariah Media has not independently verified the claims made by Falana, and there has been no recent court judgment establishing that Ali Modu Sheriff founded Boko Haram or confirming the specific allegations referenced by the senior lawyer.

Sheriff has repeatedly denied allegations linking him to Boko Haram over the years, describing such claims as politically motivated and without factual basis. He has consistently maintained that he has no affiliation with the insurgent group.

The renewed allegations are expected to generate debate, particularly because they come from one of Nigeria’s most prominent human rights lawyers and senior legal practitioners.

At the time of filing this report, Ali Modu Sheriff had not publicly responded to Falana’s latest remarks.

The latest exchange underscores the continuing public interest in questions surrounding the origins and early history of Boko Haram, even as Nigeria continues efforts to combat insurgency and improve security across affected regions.

Should Sheriff respond or pursue legal action, the development could place the allegations before a court, where evidence and legal arguments would be subject to judicial scrutiny.
