Nigerian-American Engineer Yinka Ogunbiyi Develops World’s First Hair-Braiding Robot
A Nigerian-American engineer and entrepreneur, Yinka Ogunbiyi, is making global headlines after developing what is being described as the world’s first braid-assist robot, an innovation designed to transform the hair-braiding industry by reducing the time and physical strain involved in the process.
Ogunbiyi, a graduate of Harvard University with backgrounds in engineering and business, founded HaloBraid, a technology company focused on using robotics to support professional hairstylists rather than replace them.
The innovation was inspired by a personal experience during the COVID-19 pandemic when Ogunbiyi attempted to braid her own hair. The process reportedly took four days, prompting her to question why a task performed by millions of people worldwide had not yet benefited from robotic assistance.
That question eventually led to the creation of HaloBraid.
Unlike conventional assumptions about automation, the HaloBraid machine does not completely replace hairstylists. Instead, it serves as an intelligent assistant by handling the repetitive weaving process after a stylist begins the braid and positions the hair extensions.
The technology is designed to reduce the thousands of repetitive hand and wrist movements professional braiders perform daily, movements that often contribute to fatigue, arthritis, wrist injuries and other long-term occupational health problems.
According to the company, the robot can complete sections of the braiding process significantly faster than manual methods, helping salons serve more clients while reducing physical stress on stylists.
The innovation has already attracted widespread attention within the beauty and technology industries.
Reports indicate that HaloBraid has secured approximately $7 million in seed funding from investors, including Seven Seven Six, the venture capital firm founded by Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian.
The company also says thousands of salons have expressed interest in adopting the technology once commercial production begins.
Speaking about the project, Ogunbiyi has consistently stressed that the robot is intended to empower hairstylists, not replace them.
She believes professional braiders will continue to play the most important role in creating hairstyles, while robotics can take over the repetitive aspects of the work, allowing stylists to focus on creativity, customer care and precision.
The breakthrough is being celebrated by many as another example of African excellence in science, engineering and innovation, demonstrating how technology can be used to solve everyday problems affecting millions of people across the world.
As the global beauty industry continues to embrace artificial intelligence and robotics, HaloBraid is expected to open a new chapter in haircare by combining traditional braiding techniques with modern engineering.
If successfully commercialised, the invention could significantly reduce salon appointment times while improving working conditions for professional braiders across the world.
